A student’s technological and social media concerns

On a rainy Wednesday in February, one De Anza college student discussed how social media and technology is a great asset, but certainly does have its drawbacks with intelligence and dependency.

John Bricker, a 19-year-old journalism major, explained how with the increase of technology and social media, he believes that society might not be getting more intelligent despite the efficient way of getting information.

“Value of information has gone down,” he said.

Being a journalism student, Bricker does realize the importance of technology and social media as the modern world grows and communicates. The question of dependency on both resources still stand in his mind and that one must make a “personal decision” to where they draw that line of dependency.

“I roll my eyes whenever I see a 4-year-old with an iPad,” Bricker said, suggesting that the issue of reliance on technology and social media platforms should not start so young.

For this journalism major, the growing technology in the Silicon Valley has his worries placed on his future. He explained that he does “hope robots don’t start writing news stories, or I’ll be out of a job.”
